These carved timber posts serve as sculptural street bollards and boundary markers, commissioned by Waterford City and County Council as part of broader public realm improvements, pedestrianisation schemes, and heritage trail enhancements across the historic city centre.
Purpose and Context
Functional Street Furniture: Positioned at critical urban thresholds—such as outside the St Patrick’s Gateway Centre (the former St Patrick’s Church) on Patrick Street—these bollards mark the junction toward Alexander Street and City Square. They define pedestrian-priority zones, prevent vehicular encroachment, and visually frame historic entranceways.
Civic and Historical Symbolism: In place of utilitarian steel or cast-iron bollards, Waterford opted for carved timber totem markers that evoke the city’s rich medieval, Viking, and early Gaelic roots. Design and Iconography: The posts feature stylised figures representing early medieval Norse and Gaelic guardians, blending functional urban demarcation with tactile public art.
