Photonique

At Photonique, we believe that preserving a massive visual archive requires more than just storing files—it demands constant innovation. Photonique serves as the dedicated testbed and continuous proof of concept for a massive digital revitalization project. Through this platform, The Urban Cartographer is completely rebuilding and future-proofing a diverse ecosystem of documentary websites, including Infomatique, Streets Of Ireland, and ExcelentStreetImages. Because every groundbreaking idea needs to be rigorously tested before deployment, Photonique is where we pioneer the workflows of tomorrow.

Why We Are Overhauling Our Infrastructure

Managing an archive of over one million photographs requires absolute control over security, performance, and scalability. To achieve this, we have made several deliberate, strategic shifts away from conventional web hosting models:

Moving Beyond Traditional CMS: For enhanced security and structural integrity, we moved away from WordPress. Instead, we have adopted RapidWeaver Elements combined with jAlbum.

Elements allows us to generate flat, static sites using modern CMS architectures and Markdown files rather than relying on heavy, vulnerable SQL databases.

jAlbum provides the robust, high-speed cataloging performance that an archive of our scale demands.

The Shift to True Self-Hosting: Relying on third-party hosting services frequently exposed us to unexpected storage restrictions and arbitrary platform limitations that stifled our growth.

Taking full ownership of our infrastructure was a massive decision, but it was the only way to guarantee the capacity and operational freedom required for our work.

Modernizing the Network Edge: To ensure optimal delivery and performance, we are actively transitioning our underlying server environment. By moving away from local MAMP configurations and adopting cutting-edge network tunneling technology at our edge, we ensure our self-hosted infrastructure remains secure, agile, and remarkably fast.

Driven by Innovation

Photonique is a living lab. By treating this platform as a rolling vanguard for new technologies, we ensure that the vast photographic history we manage remains accessible, secure, and performant for decades to come. We aren't just maintaining an archive; we are defining how modern, large-scale digital heritage is hosted and preserved.
