The Story Behind the Project: Why Photonique

Welcome to photonique.org. This site serves as the dedicated technical testbed and experimental playground for a much larger documentary endeavor. To understand why this space exists—and why it carries this specific name—requires looking back across several decades of technology, personal quirks, and a lifelong passion for archiving the world around us.

The Evolution of a Name: From “Infomatique” to “Photonique”

The story of the ”-que” suffix goes back to 1954. As a four-year-old just learning to write, I developed a distinct stylistic habit: I thought appending “que” to the end of words simply looked elegant. Combined with a childhood reputation for being a bit of a know-all, my grandmother affectionately dubbed me “Infomatique.”

That nickname stuck and eventually found its true purpose at the dawn of the digital age:

  • 1981: I established the very first Amiga-based Bulletin Board System (BBS) in Ireland, naturally naming it Infomatique.
  • The Internet Era: As the web grew, I officially registered infomatique.org. That early linguistic habit turned into a permanent domain-naming preference—partly for the nostalgia, and partly because these unique names were readily available.

When it came time to build a dedicated, experimental space for light-based digital media, the progression was natural: Photonique (derived from photon, the fundamental particle of light).

The Architecture of the Archive

Over the years, my digital archiving projects have evolved through various iterations and domain names:

  • streetsofdublin.com: An early project that was eventually retired. While successful, the name felt too geographically restrictive for an archive destined to expand beyond a single city.
  • excellentstreetimages.com: Originally registered for a temporary project, this platform grew at a massive rate, quickly becoming the home for a sprawling, rapidly expanding catalog of hundreds of thousands of street photographs. Moving forward, this remains the primary, public-facing gallery.
  • The Urban Cartographer: This is the overarching brand and identity for the entire operation, unifying the various documentary and archival threads under a single philosophy of urban mapping and visual preservation.

Why Photonique.org Exists

With an archive of this scale, web infrastructure requires constant optimization, future-proofing, and performance tuning. You cannot test radical script changes, compression algorithms, or hosting configurations on a live, high-traffic gallery.

photonique.org is the solution. It is a live testbed designed for:

  • Performance Testing: Trialling cutting-edge file formats (like AVIF) and server-side configurations to ensure massive image libraries load instantly.
  • Infrastructure Experimentation: Evaluating self-hosted web environments, publishing platforms, and database management tools.
  • Unrestricted Coding: A safe sandbox to break things, fix them, and optimize workflows before deploying them to the main public archive.

A Note on Digital Philosophy: No “www” and No Ads

Visitors often notice two distinct characteristics about how this site—and my wider web footprint—is managed:

The Omission of ‘www’ I have never utilized the www. prefix. There is no complex technical reason for this; it is simply a long-standing aesthetic preference. The web is cleaner without it.

The .org Designation I intentionally choose .org domains for my non-commercial projects. This extension serves as a badge of intent: these sites are entirely non-commercial, public resources. You will never find advertising, sponsored tracking, or commercial paywalls here. This is pure digital archiving, preserved for the sake of the record itself.
