In a poetic turn, the house reputedly built for the “Apollo of the Arts” has become a genuine home for the arts, evolving from a passive heritage object into an active cultural producer that contributes dynamically to the contemporary life of Cork.

Exterior Features

The building presents as a detached, five-bay, three-storey house with a dormer attic. Its front elevation is composed of a warm red brick, a fashionable and high-status material for the period. The most distinguished feature is the main entrance, framed by a finely carved limestone doorcase and crowned with an elegant swan-neck pediment—a hallmark of high-quality early 18th-century design. The importance of this feature is underscored by recent conservation efforts, including a grant for its repair in 2023.

Interior Heritage and National Significance

Crucial to the building’s value is the remarkable survival of its interior. Unlike many buildings of its age, No. 50 retains a significant portion of its early 18th-century fabric, including ornate plasterwork (stucco), extensive timber panelling, panelled doors, and a fine original staircase.

In recognition of its importance, the building is officially rated as being of ‘National’ significance in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage—the highest rating afforded. The appraisal notes that it is “a particularly important contributor to the architectural heritage of Cork, as few early eighteenth-century domestic buildings survive”. Its rarity elevates it from a fine local building to an asset of national importance.

The history of 50 Pope’s Quay is a rich tapestry of people and purposes, reflecting the broader social and economic currents that have shaped Cork. Its journey charts the city’s own story: from mercantile wealth and public health reform to urban decay and cultural regeneration.

Aristocrats and Merchants

The building’s origin story is tied to Richard Boyle, the 4th Earl of Cork, a leading patron of Palladian architecture nicknamed the “Apollo of the Arts.” While it’s reputed that the house was built for him, there’s little evidence he ever resided there. In the mid-19th century, its occupant was more verifiable: Henry Maultby, a cooper and butter merchant. This placed the house at the epicentre of the Cork Butter Market, when the city was one of the world’s major food-exporting ports. No. 50 was not just a residence but the command centre for a business fuelling Cork’s primary economic engine.

A Place of Healing and Lodging

In the late Victorian era, the building transformed from a private dwelling to a public institution. From 1876 to 1898, it served as the County and City of Cork Hospital for Women and Children. This reflected the era’s drive for philanthropic initiatives to meet the needs of a growing urban population.

For much of the 20th century, the grand house was repurposed as a lodging house. Census records offer a fascinating glimpse into its life. The 1901 Census lists residents including a French priest, Abbé Louis Bertrand, who reportedly produced his own medicines. By 1911, it was home to Patrick Ryan, a sergeant in the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC), and his large family. After his time, his daughters continued to run it as a lodging home, with a noted preference for tenants who were schoolteachers.

Decline and Rebirth: The Cork Civic Trust Intervention

The late 20th century marked the most perilous chapter for 50 Pope’s Quay, a period of steep decline that threatened its very existence. However, this crisis also precipitated its rescue and ultimate rebirth.

Dereliction and Rescue

After the Ryan family departed, the house began a slow descent into neglect, and by the 1980s, it was derelict. Recognising its importance, Cork City Council intervened and took the property into public ownership, halting its deterioration.

The definitive turning point came in the 1990s with the establishment of the Cork Civic Trust. In a bold and defining move, the Trust identified the derelict house for its first major conservation project. Under the expert supervision of Jack Coughlan Architects, the Trust embarked on a comprehensive and sensitive restoration. The guiding principle was to preserve the building’s authentic historical features while carefully adapting it for contemporary use. The project’s success provided the Trust with immense credibility and a flagship achievement, demonstrating that even severely neglected heritage buildings could be saved and given a vibrant new life.

Ongoing Conservation

The commitment to the building is ongoing. In 2023, the first major heritage maintenance works in a quarter of a century were undertaken to address issues like decaying windows, water ingress, and plaster repairs. Funding was secured from a coalition of bodies, including The Heritage Council, the Built Heritage Investment Scheme, Cork City Council, and the Irish Georgian Society, demonstrating a sustained, multi-agency commitment to this architectural treasure.

A Home for the Arts: The House in the 21st Century 🏛️

Following its meticulous restoration, 50 Pope’s Quay has been reborn as Civic Trust House, a dynamic part of Cork’s cultural landscape. This contemporary identity completes a narrative arc, transforming the house reputedly built for the “Apollo of the Arts” into a genuine home for Cork’s arts community.

Its new purpose was cemented when it served as the headquarters for Cork 2005: European Capital of Culture. In 2006, it became the permanent home of “Arts @ Civic Trust House,” a collective of professional arts organisations. This model provides resident companies with affordable office space, shared resources, and a collaborative environment. The income generated from hiring its elegant, modern boardroom directly supports the non-profit arts community housed within, creating a sustainable operational model.

The Resident Arts Community

Location, Location, Location: The Pope’s Quay Context 📍

The significance of 50 Pope’s Quay is deeply intertwined with its setting along the north channel of the River Lee.

The quay is not named after the Pope in Rome but for the Widow Pope, a local merchant who, in 1718, was granted permission “to build a quay.” This firmly dates its establishment and shows that the waterfront was driven by the city’s commercial interests, creating a fashionable address.

The area’s architectural gravity is enhanced by landmarks like St. Mary’s Dominican Church, a magnificent classical church whose foundation stone was laid in 1832. Today, the house remains central, just across the river from the Cork Opera House and a short walk from St. Patrick Street. It’s well-served by public transport and the city’s bike-share scheme, making it an ideal location for a contemporary cultural hub rooted in the city’s past and fully engaged with its present.

Upon my arrival in Cork, I made a beeline for Daly’s Bridge. My goal was to photograph the iconic structure with my Sony A7RV, creating a set of reference images to compare against my Leica Q3. However, my plans were unfortunately cut short. Back at the Moxy Hotel, I made the frustrating discovery that I had packed neither a spare battery nor a charger, a simple oversight that prevented any return trips to the area.

Daly’s Bridge: A Cork Landmark

Affectionately known to Corkonians as “The Shakey Bridge,” Daly’s Bridge is a cherished landmark and the only pedestrian suspension bridge in Cork city. Its distinct wobble, storied past, and recent restoration have solidified its place in the hearts of locals.

A Historic Crossing

Before the bridge’s existence, a ferry service operated by the Dooley family provided a crucial connection across the River Lee, linking the residential area of Sunday’s Well with the Mardyke and the newly developing Fitzgerald’s Park. By the early 20th century, demand had outgrown the ferry, and local residents began lobbying for a permanent footbridge.

The bridge was officially commissioned in the mid-1920s. Its construction was made possible by a financial contribution from James Daly, a local butter merchant, which is why its official name is Daly’s Bridge. The structure was a product of modern engineering for its time, designed by the Cork City Engineer Stephen W. Farrington and constructed by the London-based company, David Rowell & Co. It officially opened to the public in 1927.

The bridge’s design is what gives it its famous characteristic. As a suspension bridge with a timber-planked walkway, it was engineered to have a certain amount of flexibility. This inherent movement, or “shake,” quickly earned it its popular nickname, which has endured for generations. For many, walking across and feeling the gentle sway is a quintessential Cork experience.

Restoration: Preserving the Shake

After nearly a century of service, the beloved bridge was showing significant signs of wear and tear, including extensive corrosion. In 2017, inspections concluded that major repairs were necessary to ensure its longevity. A comprehensive €1.7 million restoration project was initiated, funded by Cork City Council, the National Transport Authority, and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.

The restoration was a meticulous process. The main structure was carefully dismantled in sections and transported off-site for specialist repairs. This included:

Removing and replacing all timber decking.

Grit-blasting the original wrought iron latticework to remove corrosion.

Repairing defective steelwork and applying a modern, protective paint system.

Replacing the suspension cables.

Upgrading the approach ramps and public lighting.

A crucial and publicly debated aspect of the project was the preservation of the bridge’s signature “shake.” Engineers carefully modelled the structure’s dynamic response to ensure that, following the repairs, the wobble would be retained. The project was successfully completed, and the bridge was reopened to the public in December 2020, much to the delight of the local community.

The Shakey Bridge is more than just a convenient crossing; it’s a piece of living heritage. Its location connecting the tranquil Sunday’s Well area to the beautiful public gardens of Fitzgerald’s Park makes it a popular route for walkers, runners, and families.

The bridge holds a nostalgic value for countless Corkonians who have grown up with it. The act of deliberately jumping on the bridge to make it sway is a rite of passage for many local children. Its recent restoration, particularly the effort to save its defining feature, highlights the deep affection and sense of ownership the community has for this unique landmark. The bridge frequently features in local art, photography, and has even gained international attention, securing its status as an iconic symbol of Cork.

Vessel Name: AETHRA. The name was adopted following its sale in 2015. It is of Greek origin (Αίθρα), the mother of Theseus in Greek mythology, and means “bright sky,” indicating the new owners’ affiliation with the Greek maritime industry.

Former Name: POLAR PRINCE. The vessel operated under this name from its delivery in 1999 until its sale in June 2015.

Flag and Registration History

The vessel’s flag has changed over time, directly reflecting its corporate journey. The chronological progression allows for the reconciliation of differing Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) and call sign numbers.

1999 – June 2015 (as POLAR PRINCE): The vessel sailed under the flag of Norway with a home port of Bergen. This was consistent with its construction in a Norwegian shipyard for its Norwegian owner, GC Rieber Shipping.

June 2015 – c. 2022 (as AETHRA): Following the sale, the vessel was re-flagged to Cyprus, with its home port registered as Limassol. This coincided with its acquisition by the Cyprus-registered entity, Asso Aethra Navigation Company Limited. During this period, its identifiers were MMSI 212466000 and Call Sign 5BHH4.

c. 2022 – Present (as AETHRA): More recent data shows a subsequent change to the flag of Greece. This move aligns the vessel’s official registration with the operational centre of its management group, Asso.subsea, which is headquartered in Elefsina, Greece. Its current identifiers are MMSI 241831000 and Call Sign SVDM6.

This evolution is not arbitrary. The initial Norwegian flag represented its origin. The shift to Cyprus was a standard administrative step for corporate structuring, while the final move to the Greek flag represents a deeper strategic alignment with its operator’s national maritime ecosystem.

In June 2015, GC Rieber Shipping sold the Polar Prince for a reported price of approximately US$30 million. The buyer was confirmed to be associated with Asso Divers (now part of the Asso Group), a Greek-based subsea contractor.

This transaction was a logical move for both parties. The seller, GC Rieber, was executing a fleet modernisation strategy, divesting an older, unemployed asset. The buyer, Asso Group, saw an opportunity to acquire a robust, well-built platform at a competitive price and immediately invest in targeted upgrades. This “buy and upgrade” approach was a cost-effective strategy to acquire a vessel perfectly tailored to their needs in the growing subsea cable and offshore renewables market.

Current Ownership Structure (2015 – Present)

Registered Owner: Asso Aethra Navigation Company Limited, an entity registered in Cyprus.

Manager and Operator: Day-to-day management is handled by Asso.subsea Ltd. and ASSO MARINE SHIPPING CO, the operational arms of the group based in Greece and Cyprus.

Operational History and Project Participation
Aethra’s track record illustrates its successful transformation into a sought-after specialist in the European energy sector.

Career as Aethra: A Specialist in Subsea Cables

Following its 2015 acquisition and extensive upgrades, Aethra was repositioned as a specialist Trenching Support Vessel. Its consistent employment on flagship offshore wind and power interconnector projects demonstrates the success of its owners’ strategy. The vessel is now trusted by major energy utilities and developers to execute critical work on multi-billion-euro infrastructure projects. This shift from general oil and gas work to a leading role in renewables perfectly mirrors the wider energy transition.

On 24 June 2021, Aethra became the focus of a hostile confrontation, providing a stark case study of the non-technical risks associated with offshore energy development.

The incident occurred at the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm site off the coast of Brittany, France, where Aethra was performing trenching operations. The confrontation was a pre-meditated direct action by local French fishing vessels protesting the development.

As fishing vessels converged on the worksite, they committed a series of serious offences observed by French maritime authorities:

Illegal Entry: They deliberately entered the legally established exclusion zone around the construction site.

Dangerous Manoeuvres: They repeatedly violated collision regulations by manoeuvring dangerously close to Aethra.

Direct Aggression: Actions escalated to include firing distress rockets and making explicit verbal threats of boarding and sabotage against the Master of Aethra over VHF radio.

Faced with a rapidly escalating and dangerous situation, the Master of the Aethra made the command decision to cease all work and withdraw from the area. This action was taken to de-escalate the tension and ensure the safety of life and the vessel, which is a Master’s primary responsibility.

The Master’s conduct exemplifies professional seamanship and sound risk management. This incident serves as a positive testament to the judgement and professionalism of the vessel’s command and management company in handling a severe operational crisis.

IN CORK EVERYWHERE IS UPHILL

On my first visit to Cork City I asked for directions and was told that “you could not miss it, it is up the hill”.

One of the most notable features of Summerhill North is St Luke’s Church, a deconsecrated Romanesque Revival Anglican church that is now a popular live music venue. The church is known for its beautiful acoustics and its intimate setting, and it has hosted a wide variety of artists over the years.

Summerhill North is also home to Gabriel House, a former convent that has been converted into very attractive rooms. The complex is located in a quiet and peaceful setting, and they offer stunning views of the city skyline.

I first started visiting Cork in 2006 but that year I stayed in a Hotel outside Cobh and it was a disaster as it rained so much that I abandoned my holiday and returned home to Dublin after three days … my Sigma DSLR failed because of the rain and became unusable. In 2010 I stayed for a week at the Metropole on McCurtain Street and the year later at Gabriel House which I used almost every year since then with May 2023 being my most recent visit.

It is now 9 December 2023 and I began planning my city-visit schedule for 2024 and, with the exception of Kilkenny, I have failed to find suitable accommodation at prices that I am willing to pay. For about ten years I stayed at the Gabrielle House Hotel in Cork, Summerhill North, but unfortunately since my last visit in May 2023 their prices have greatly increased and they were seeking more than Euro 900 to be paid at the time of booking which does not suit me. In 2023 I paid Euro 349 for four nights and paid on arrival. I tried to book a room for four nights in May 2024 and the asking price was Euro 919 in advance. To be fair the asking price at the Maldron was Euro 1302 (payment on arrival).

[UPDATE] I visited the website and noted the following statement: “The Gabriel House has been recently taken over by a new management, which has restored the hotel back to its former glory. All rooms retain original features yet provide with modern comfort and up-to-date amenities that will charm both business and leisure guests. In addition, they can enjoy a delicious breakfast served every morning at no extra cost.” I checked just now [9 December 2023] … and was offered a room 13-16 May 2024 at a cost of Euro 600 but breakfast is Euro 14 per day extra [it should be noted that you really should get the breakfast as it will keep you going all day]. Free Cancellation before 29 April and nothing to pay until 26 April 2024. This is a change since I tried to book a few weeks ago however a number of attempts produced a variety of results.

Overall, Summerhill North is a charming and welcoming neighbourhood that offers a mix of urban amenities and suburban tranquility. It is a great place to live for anyone who wants to be close to the city centre without sacrificing a sense of community and a connection to nature.

NUMBER ONE COOK STREET AND CARRIAGE ARCH ENTRANCE TO ELBOW LANE

THE ZANIBAR RESTAURANT WAS LOCATED HERE

For many years my favourite Chinese Restaurant was located on Cook Street. The name of the Chinese restaurant was the Ambassador Chinese Restaurant. It closed after over 30 years in business. I visited on the last day and the manager told me that they had decided to close because the building had been purchased by Pennys [Primark]. The last time I checked the building appeared to be unoccupied.

Elbow Lane is the sign above the green gateway, Elbow Lane in Cork City is a narrow laneway that runs between Oliver Plunkett Street and Patrick Street in the heart of the city centre. The laneway is said to have gotten its name from the fact that it was once used by butchers to transport their meat to the market. The butchers would often have to bend their elbows to get through the narrow passage, hence the name. Note: There is an Elbow Lane restaurant located on Oliver Plunkett Street

This building at No One Cook Street is described as follows: “Terraced two-bay four-storey commercial building, built c. 1925, with single-bay two-storey block incorporating carriage arch to the south. Flat roof with rendered parapet, and having balustrade to southern bay. Rendered walls with incised render surrounds to window openings, and having decorative frieze over carriage arch. Render consoles, fascia, lettering and plaque to carriage arch, with pair of timber doors having wrought-iron hinges. Segmental-arched openings to first floor, square-headed opening and hexagonal opening to second floor, and square-headed openings to third floor. Timber casement windows.”

In 2022 Cork City Council approved plans submitted by Primark for the expansion of the city centre store. The plans would see the retail space of the store increase in size by 17,000 sq ft to 54,000 sq ft, with the project encompassing a site that stretches from Robert St to Cook St, and from Patrick St to Oliver Plunkett St. However, The owner of a property on Cook St, had expressed concerns surrounding the plans for Elbow Lane as part of the development. They property owner has argued that the developer has failed to answer questions such as how they propose to acquire Elbow Lane to develop those lands and secondly “how they propose to then accommodate the accrued private business usage rights for neighbouring premises over Elbow Lane at the Cook Street end of Elbow Lane for the permanent storage, for collection purposes, of refuse bins from that location since their planning application is set to close off that entrance for their sole private usage”.

The status of the Penneys expansion plan in Cork City Centre is that it has been approved. Cork City Council granted planning permission for the expansion in August 2023. The expansion is expected to take around two years to complete, and is estimated to cost around €30 million. Once completed, the new Penneys store will be one of the largest in the country.
