NORTH CIRCULAR ROAD IN LIMERICK [APRIL 2022 LEGACY PHOTO COLLECTION]

Up until the Covid-19 restrictions I visited Limerick at least once every year. However since then, because of massive increases in the cost of hotel accommodation, my visits have become less frequent to the extent that I have not visited the city since April 2022. Hopefully, I will be able recommence my annual schedule beginning late 2025 or early 2026

The North Circular Road (NCR), locally known as NCR, is a residential road located on the north side of Limerick, Ireland. It is considered one of the more affluent and sought-after areas of Limerick City.

History:

The North Circular Road was developed in the 19th century as part of the expansion of Limerick City. The road was designed to provide a grand and spacious residential area for the city's growing middle and upper classes. The architecture of the area reflects the Victorian and Edwardian periods, with many large detached houses and semi-detached houses built in the styles of the time.

Buildings/Locations of Interest:

The North Circular Road is primarily a residential area, but there are a few notable buildings and locations of interest:

Residential Buildings: The west end of the North Circular Road contains mostly large detached houses, while the east end is predominantly middle class and contains mostly semi-detached houses alongside some apartment blocks.

Amenities: The Ardhú Bar is the local pub, situated at the top of Roses Avenue near the Ennis Road. Westfield Park is a public park located off the North Circular Road. The park's walkways are linked by road crossing to the pathway along the River Shannon.

The North Circular Road is home to several schools, including:

John F. Kennedy Memorial School (primary school for boys)

Salesian Infant School Fernbank (primary school for girls)

Ardscoil Rís (secondary school for boys)

Villiers School (private, Protestant secondary school)

Religious Buildings: The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary is a Roman Catholic church situated between the North Circular Road and the Ennis Road.

Architectural Overview:

The architecture of the North Circular Road is characterised by a mix of styles, reflecting the different periods in which the houses were built. The larger detached houses at the west end of the road are typically Victorian and Edwardian in style, with features such as bay windows, ornate gables, and decorative brickwork. The semi-detached houses at the east end of the road are generally more modest in style, but still reflect the architectural trends of the time.
