The Rathmines Town Hall Clock: A Local Landmark

Construction of Rathmines Town Hall began in 1895, replacing the previous building on the same site. The commissioners entrusted the design to the renowned Irish architect, Sir Thomas Drew, who created an impressive red sandstone and brick structure, notable for its first-floor bay window. However, the building's most prominent feature is undoubtedly its soaring clock tower, visible across the neighbourhood.

The clock itself was crafted by Chancellor and Son, a local firm eager to prove their capabilities against English and Scottish competitors. Securing the commission, they produced a four-faced clock, one for each side of the tower. Before the advent of electric power, the clock faces frequently displayed different times, leading to the nickname "four-faced liar." This moniker, however, is also associated with the much older Shandon Clock in Cork City.
